While at Comic-Con, Variety caught up with Regina King to ask her how it’s been taking on the lead role in HBO’s Watchmen series. The actress/director intimated she was “up for the challenge” set to her by director Damon Lindelof to take part in the continuation of the Watchmen franchise.

“The fact that Damon just saw me in this space and knew that I could handle it,” she said. She added that the role is “a lot of responsibility, but also just makes my heart giggle.”

“It was a little scary because I was directing the finale of Insecure, so I literally wrapped that and flew to Atlanta the next day to start Watchmen,” she said. “I was a little nervous like am I prepared enough? But I feel really great about what we did.”

King, who is believed to be playing a character named Angela Abar, is part of what she called “an amazing cast,” which includes Louis Gossett Jr., Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Adelaide Clemens and Andrew Howard. “I got to do some really amazing things with Don Johnson, so all teasers, but I can’t really tell you anything.”

King also said that the world of HBO’s Watchmen series is different enough from the source material so that it can do its own thing.

“I felt like we’re really lucky because Damon is so smart to…create his own, I don’t want to say a world, but we don’t have to be beholden to what everyone’s already seen with Watchmen,” she said. “I think everybody will just be surprised. It’s not a total redo; it’s its own world.”

This is not the first time King has worked with Lindelof; the last time she and Lindelof worked together was on another HBO series, The Leftovers.
