Never say never. Airing just one season back in 2017, Fox’s baseball drama Pitch garnered a cult following that campaigned for the show then, and still to this day, for it to remain on the air.
Now, due to studio politics, there seems to be a chance that the show could get a revival. Why? Well, Disney, which acquired 20th Century Fox Television in the mega Disney-Fox merger, wants to keep Dan Fogelman in the fold after his current deal at the studio is up. Fogelman, who created Pitch, also created one of the biggest shows on television right now, This Is Us.
To entice Fogelman to stay, The Hollywood Reporter says that Pitch could get put on the table to get brought back, seemingly as a bargaining chip to get Fogelman to stay.
The report in THR states:
Indeed, the lengths media giants are willing to go to land (or keep) top showrunners is reaching historic peaks. Disney’s 20th TV, for example, may revive Dan Fogelman’s now-defunct 2016 sports drama Pitch as a carrot to entice the This Is Us creator to remain in-house. Abrams and Fogelman — along with Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy), Mike Schur (The Good Place) and Steve Levitan (Modern Family) — are prime examples of the hitmakers who are poised to land mammoth overall deals, each of which would have been the biggest of its kind just five years ago.
Pitch starred Kylie Bunbury, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mark Consuelos, Mo McRae, Meagan Holder and Ali Larter.
The show chronicled the story of a young pitcher, Ginny Baker (Bunbury) who becomes the first woman to play Major League Baseball as she’s on an impossible and improbable journey, representing her gender as she embarks on a successful baseball career under the glare of the white-hot media spotlight.
If by some miracle the show were to come back, it would be in a predicament as many of its stars have busy gigs. Consuelos is probably the most locked-in, as he’s a series regular on The CW’s Riverdale. Gosselaar is one of the leads of Fox’s The Passage, but that show is currently on the bubble for renewal. Bunbury, though not in a series regular role since Pitch, has kept busy, starring in the 2018 film Game Night and having a guest stint on Law and Order: SVU. She’ll next be seen on Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us, the scripted drama series on The Central Park Five case.
