Following indie hits like Burning Cane and Jezebel, the latest Netflix release from Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY is Residue. It hits Netflix and select theaters on Sept. 17.

The film is written, directed and produced by Merawi Gerima, the son of pioneering indie filmmaker Haile Gerima. Last weekend, the film was an official selection at the 77th Venice International Film Festival’s Giornate degli Autori.

Here’s the description: The film finds aspiring filmmaker Jay (Obinna Nwachukwu) returning to his childhood Washington, DC, neighborhood that has been gentrified beyond recognition. Dealing with alienation from his friends, troubled by the disappearance of his best friend, and unsure of his place in this new community, Jay confronts issues of identity, gentrification and loss.
