The Real Housewives of Atlanta‘s Porsha Williams has come a long way in her civil rights activism journey. The granddaughter of Hosea Williams shocked her co-stars in season 6 when she let it slip that she didn’t know the historic Underground Railroad wasn’t a real train. Now, she’s protesting with thousands of others across the country for justice for the unfair killings of unarmed Black people in America.
In the premiere episode of season 13, viewers watch as Williams joins peaceful protests for justice for Breonna Taylor, the 27-year-old frontline worker from Kentucky who was killed by police officers in her own home.
Williams says Taylor’s story resonates so much with her because of the circumstances in her death, and the fact that the officers are practically walking around free. She channeled her inner Hosea Williams to use her platform for the greater good.
One protest led to her arrest, along with dozens of others. Williams spent 13 hours in jail and recalled the horrendous conditions of the cell. She is clearly traumatized but still determined to continue fighting peacefully. She was also a victim of tear gas during an Atlanta protest.
“As disgusting as that place was, being inside that cage with [30 other women] actually changed my life,” she said in her confessional interview. “I’ve never shared my soul with people that I had just met. And we were sharing it because a soul had been lost, which was so ironic about the whole thing.”
Williams’ activism is a major focal point of the season. RHOA airs every Sunday on Bravo at 8 PM EST.
