Mia Thornton joined The Real Housewives of Potomac with a splash in season 6. The former stripper was initially a fan favorite and loved for her honesty about all things plastic surgery and her relationship with her much older husband, Gordon, was fascinating to her co-stars and viewers. Things took a turn when fans and co-stars began questioning whether Mia told the truth about certain aspects of her life, and in season 7, fans criticized her for an altercation with Wendy Osefo. Now, she has major personal issues as her marriage is seemingly over. And according to new reports (and an interview with another one of her co-stars) Gordon didn’t see a separation coming.
Gordon and Mia have been married for 11 years and share two children together. Their unconventional marriage has played out on the show for the past two seasons. And in the trailer for season 8, Mia reveals that she retained a divorce attorney. What led to their split is unknown but the estranged couple revealed during the season 7 reunion that they lost their standing in their chiropractic company and were living off their savings.
In a statement to People, Mia told the publication: “Like all marriages, ours has had its ups and downs,” the 38-year-old said about her marriage to the 71-year-old. “At this time, Gordon and I are separated, but my family is my number one priority, and I am committed to doing whatever it takes to make sure we are okay. We ask that you respect our privacy and give us the time and space to figure things out,” she added.
Candiace Dillard-Bassett claims she was unaware of issues between Mia and Gordon until Gordon reached out her and her husband, Chris.

“I was not aware they were having marital issues until Gordon texted and was calling Chris and Eddie, and was like, ‘Mia, I’m leaving and I’ve moved out,'” she said during a recent podcast interview, per Kempire Daily. “This was like last month,” Candiace added, presumably in August 2023. “And G was like, ‘I wanna give Candiace and Wendy all the tea so that they know what’s going on.'” But Candiace says she wants no parts.
“I was like, ‘Listen, I will get involved in a lot of s**t, I don’t want that karma on me,” she said.
It appears Mia may have been planning the separation for some time, unbeknownst to Gordon. TMZ reports Gordon was blindsided by the filing when he was officially served. The report notes that Gordon is upset over Mia’s handling of the situation and he feels she’s been putting on a front. Despite the private separation, Mia has been publicly praising Gordon on her social media.
Season 8 of RHOP is premiering on Bravo on Nov. 8. All previous seasons are available for streaming on Peacock.
