American Gods star Ricky Whittle is the latest star to join Netflix’s film adaptation of Nappily Ever After.
The film will follow “a woman named Violet (Lathan) with a seemingly flawless life — a great job, a handsome boyfriend who’s a doctor, and a meticulously maintained coiffure. But after an accident at the hair salon, each of these things starts to unravel, and Violet begins to realize that she was living the life she thought she was supposed to live, not the one that she really wanted. She starts to put the pieces back together with a little help from a soulful barber and his young daughter. Violet finds the courage to cast off some of the things that she didn’t really need, starting with the perfectly straightened hair, and find a life that has real meaning.”
According to Deadline, who reported the news, Whittle will play “Clint, a doctor from London who has a long-term relationship with Violet. The duo separate when Whittle’s character begins to feel he doesn’t really know Violet, no matter how close they are or want to be.”
Lynn Whitfield will play Violet’s mother and Ernie Hudson will play her father.
Haifaa Al-Mansour is directing and it will be produced by Southside with You producer Tracey Bing with Lathan, Jared Leboff and Marc Platt. It is yet another collaboration from Lathan and Gina Prince-Bythewood, who contributed rewrites to Tina Chism’s script.
