In an announcement made Thursday, emerging filmmakers Jonathan and Justin Gajewski, also known as the JG Brothers, are slated to develop a biopic centered around WWE wrestling legend Rocky Johnson, the father of wrestler-turned actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

The biopic, named Ring King, came to fruition after the  life rights to the famed wrestler were optioned. The duo, also twin brothers, are slated to write and produce the film. For those who are unfamiliar, Rocky Johnson’s storied legacy includes being apart of the first black tag team to take victory at the World Tag Team Championship in the World Wrestling Federation.

In terms of its narrative structure, Ring King will take place from the ’50s, all the way to the ’90s. It will track the life of Johnson, who was raised in Nova Scotia, and chronicle his plight in forging a career for himself during the civil rights era. Set against the backdrop of racial prejudice, Ring King will chronicle Johnson’s triumph in a time when his race brought unjust treatment and opposition.

“Rocky really lived the American Dream,” said the JG Brothers. “With humble beginnings in a small town in Nova Scotia, Rocky grew up being fatherless and black during one of the most heavily oppressed times for people of color. Rocky experienced all the hatred one can imagine, but still ended up dominating the world stage thanks to his hard work, determination and values.”

The JG brothers have assistant directorial credits on films such as Room, Suicide Squad, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.
