Arguably speaking, Mudbound was one of the top three best films of 2017. Its lack of a Best Picture nomination and a Best Director nomination for Dee Rees remains one of the more egregious snubs on the Academy’s part. With that said, our anticipation for Dee Rees’ follow-up movie just got kicked up a notch.
Now, Academy Award-nominated actress Rosie Perez and Edi Gathegi have joined the cast of Rees’ latest directorial effort, The Last Thing He Wanted, based on Joan Didion’s 1996 novel of the same name. The movie will center around Elena McMahon. As portrayed by Anne Hathaway, Elena inherits her father’s position as an arms dealmaker who soon finds herself in a dangerous situation when the Iran-Contra Affair reaches its fever pitch.
Rees also penned the screenplay with Marco Villalobos and will produce the film, too. Rosie Perez and Edi Gathegi join a cast that also includes Ben Affleck and Toby Jones. Perez is known for her Oscar-nominated performance in the 1993 film Fearless, as well as her iconic role in Do the Right Thing, while Gathegi is known for his role as Darwin in the superhero flick X-Men: First Class. Both of them have starred in recent NBC series: Rise for Perez and The Blacklist: Redemption for Gathegi.
