When news broke that Joss Whedon would not be writing, directing or producing the upcoming Batgirl film for DC, fans all over began speculating on who could spearhead the movie.
In what could be a huge opportunity for DC to tap the right folks to script and direct, an acclaimed writer is throwing her name in the ring.
Roxane Gay expressed interest in writing the film, tweeting @DCComics on Friday.

This would be a perfect match for Gay, who wrote Marvel’s Black Panther comic series, World of Wakanda, making her the first black woman to lead the pen for a Marvel title.
Our fingers are crossed that this happens. The director’s spot is still open. Stella Meghie, Victoria Mahoney, Dee Rees, Angela Robinson, anyone?
It would be another key win for black women in this medium, with Gina Prince-Bythewood directing the upcoming Silver & Black film for Sony’s Marvel universe.
No star has been attached to the film, although singer-actress Hailee Stenfield has been campaigning for the role.
