The story of Neil Bogart will be getting the motion picture treatment, according to an exclusive report from Deadline. Titled Spinning Gold, the script for the film was written by Timothy Scott Bogart, the son of the man who founded Casablanca Records and was responsible for launching the careers of legendary Black musicians. Bogart died in 1982 at the age of 39 from cancer and lymphoma.
A number of Black actors are slated to portray legendary Black musicians in the film. Samuel Jackson will portray funk legend George Clinton, Jason Derulo will portray Isley Brothers’ frontman Ron Isley and Kenan Thompson will portray Berry Gordy.
Disco diva Donna Summer is slated to also appear in the film. Right now, no actress has been cast, but the report says that she will be portrayed by a “top young singer.”
In addition, R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan will portray Gladys Knight, Jay Pharoah plays DJ Frankie Crocker, D.L. Hughley plays Parliament’s Bootsy Collins. Actor Jeremy Jordan will play the role of Neil Bogart.
Spinning Gold will be produced by Laurence Mark, who produced films such as acclaimed hit Dreamgirls, I, Robot and Jerry Maguire.
“I’m self-financing, we put this together ourselves and only answer to ourselves,” Bogart said of Spinning Gold in a statement. “And after it’s done, I will take it to studios that are right now looking at the returns on Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman.”
