The mysterious death of Sandra Bland still continues to garner much controversy and valid backlash against law enforcement due to state sanctioned violence and mistreatment of black women. Bland was arrested after a traffic stop in July 2015 in Texas and died in police custody soon after. Hoping to leave the viewer with more answers than questions, the new HBO documentary Say Her Name: The Death and Life of Sandra Bland will examine the circumstances surrounding Bland’s arrest and mysterious death afterwards.
The film, directed by Kate Davis and David Heilbroner, premiered in late April at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. With commentary from Bland’s mother and sisters, all of whom are eager to unravel the mystery behind Bland’s death, the documentary is sure to be a must see for fans of true crime.
