A reboot of Saved by the Bell is in development at Peacock, the upcoming NBCUniversal streaming service. The name of the service and its initial slate were announced on Tuesday.
The reboot joins other reboots at the new streamer, including Punky Brewster and Battlestar Galactica. Original comedy and drama series are also set, including a Jada Pinkett Smith series from Rashida Jones.
As of right now, the only original cast members returning for the reboot are Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez, but others are expected to return as well.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, here is the description: The new straight-to-series comedy explores what happens when California Gov. Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s role) gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools and proposes the affected students be sent to the highest-performing schools in the state — including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over-privileged Bayside kids a much-needed and hilarious dose of reality. Lopez and Berkley will return to play their beloved characters A.C. Slater and Jessie Spano, respectively, in what sources say are new roles as parents.
The original series ran from 1989-1993 on NBC and starred Gosselaar, Lopez, Dustin Diamond, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Berkley and Lark Voorhies. It resulted in two different spinoffs, Saved by the Bell: The College Years and Saved by the Bell: The New Class.
