Dexter Darden, one of the new cast members of Peacock’s Saved by the Bell reboot, said he’s proud of the show’s focus on diversity and representation.

I was a big fan of the original series…grew up watching [the reruns] on Saturday mornings. Diversity on-screen was a big thing for me at that time, so it was really easy for me to start loving the show,” he said to Shadow And Act’s Trey Mangum.

Having the opportunity to be a part of something so iconic and rebranding it in a new way–even though I love the original Saved By the Bell, I don’t know [if] as a new production, it could work the same way in 2020,” he continued. There are a lot of things happening in the world that don’t necessarily make a world like Bayside seem as relatable.”

Darden, who plays Devante in the series, talked about his admiration for the ideas showrunner and executive producer Tracey Wigfield had for the new series.

I really loved Tracey Wigfield’s…vision of not making it the slapsticky, multicam, laugh-in-the-audience, laugh track kind of show,” he said, but making it more single-cam and more in your face and really exposing the realities of the world that we live in now.”
