Sexyy Red had a vision for the success of her song, “Pound Town,” but not everyone was on board when she preached its potential — not even her team.

The smash success of hit single “Pound Town” has made Sexyy Red one of the hottest new stars on the hip-hop scene, but as she exclusively told HipHopDX at the 2023 BET Awards, not even her label believed the track had the chops to make it big.

“I was in the studio, and I showed it to my team, and they were like, ‘This ain’t it,'” she said. “I said this is the one! This the one! I’m telling you!”

Granted, there’s no way to know what song will go viral ahead of time, let alone what could be someone’s breakout hit. But for Red, she knew right away.

“I knew. I said, ‘We doin’ this because we like the song.’ And it’s my stuff. My fans love me for being me. Imma drop it,” she said.

Since its release in January, the viral sensation of this raunchy Tay Keith-produced single has racked up over 15 million streams, with many crediting this to the #PoundTownChallenge.

Much to Sexyy Red’s delight, the song impressed Nicki Minaj, who hopped on the official remix late May. The result, “Pound Town 2,” has become Sexyy Red’s biggest hit.

“@nickiminaj I [ap]preciate you so much for blessin’ my track, this is major, I’m so humble[d] and grateful,” the St. Louis native wrote on Instagram.

2023 has been a busy year for the budding rapper.

Just last month, Red dropped her major label debut album, Hood Hottest Princess. “Looking For The Hoes (Ain’t My Fault)” got a hilarious new video to accompany the song posted last week.

She also followed up with two new singles since then. Red also joined the song “Sheisty” with “Area Codes” rapper Kali and XXL Freshman Finesse2Tymes. And just this weekend, the 25-year-old released her new single, “Skee Yee.”

It’s no secret that the hip-hop artist is making waves on the rap scene, and if she continues pushing for the music she knows will resonate with her fans, we will surely see more viral tracks from her in the future.

“I’m going to just keep being myself…” she said. “I’m going to try to stay around for a long time,” she told VIBE.
