The Talk returned on Monday after taking a nearly month-long hiatus due to the Sharon Osbourne controversy. Upon the show’s return, a vacant seat left by Osbourne was filled by a guest professional, Dr. Donald E. Grant.
Gran is an expert on diversity, equity, inclusion and justice. To recap during the March 10 episode, things were heated when Osbourne defended her friend Piers Morgan who was under fire for his constant berating of Meghan Markle.
Sheryl Underwood asked Osbourne, “What would you say to people who may feel that while you’re standing by your friend, it appears you gave validation or safe haven to something that he has uttered that is racist, even if you don’t agree?”
Osbourne responded, “I feel like I’m about to be put in the electric chair because I have a friend who many people think is racist, so that makes me a racist.”
In a shocking moment, Osbourne demanded Underwood explain why Morgan’s remarks were racist. She also told Underwood “not to cry” and “if anyone should be crying, it should be me”.
In true “I don’t want to stand on my comments because I don’t want the repercussions” form, Osbourne apologized for the insensitive and ignorant remarks days after they were made. An internal investigation was launched and weeks later it was announced The Talk would return without Osbourne.
Underwood opened up on Monday’s show with telling Dr. Grant, “I feel like I’m in PTSD because it was a trauma.”
She continued, “I didn’t want to escalate things with Sharon because I thought I was having a conversation with a friend, but also, I knew I had to be an example for others to follow. I didn’t want to be perceived as that angry Black woman, and that really scared me. I didn’t want to be that, and I wanted to remain calm and focused.”
Underwood also gave insight on Osbourne sharing text messages she sent Underwood, explaining that she did not respond due to the internal investigation that was ongoing.
“I’ve never been through anything like this, so I didn’t know if you were supposed to communicate or not while there’s an international investigation. So I want to be clear with this, I have not spoken to Sharon” she said.
