Shonda Rhimes is known for creating and producing the hit ABC shows Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away with Murder. After a major coup by Netflix, Rhimes left ABC and is now flexing her hit-making muscles for the streaming giant, developing a science fiction and television universe.

In collaboration with Matt Reeves, Rhimes will develop a feature film and television universe based on Blake Crouch’s upcoming science fiction novel Recursion.

Set to be released in 2019, Recursion chronicles the repercussions that occur when a scientist invents a game-changing piece of technology that allows people to reactivate and reinvent their memories, offering its subjects the chance to reinvent their lives with dire consequences. The project will be one of many that Rhimes and Shondaland are developing under the new deal with Netflix.

“Projects like this are why I came to Netflix,” said Rhimes. “The opportunity to explore a multigenre universe in innovative ways is extremely exciting. Matt and Blake both have the tremendous ability to build compelling characters and imaginative landscapes, and I am thrilled to work alongside them.”

Crouch’s Wayward Pines was a Fox series starring Matt Dillon and Terrence Howard, and aired for two seasons.
