Silver & Black, the Sony Spider-Man spinoff directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, has nixed its theatrical release date of February 8, 2019. The studio is said to be looking at another release date. Silver & Black, which focuses on mercenary Silver Sable and petty thief Black Cat in a (pun not intended) cat-and-mouse game of crime and bounty hunting, hasn’t yet been cast.
Deadline says that the film is going back into development for script rewrites. The latest draft is from Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel) and Lindsey Beer (Godzilla vs. King Kong).
The film is one of several Spider-Man reboots Sony has coming down the pike, such as the Tom Hardy vehicle Venom, which will be in theaters October 5, and Nightwatch, which will reportedly have a script by Luke Cage‘s Cheo Hodari Coker and could have Spike Lee on as director. Prince-Bythewood’s latest directing notch includes directing the pilot for Freeform’s Marvel YA show, Cloak & Dagger, which will premiere June 7.
Debuting in Amazing Spider-Man #194 in 1979, Black Cat is a staple of Spider-Man’s Marvel Universe. Despite her being a thief, she’s maintained a flirty relationship with Spider-Man, and the two even dated periodically although she eventually turned against him and formed a crime ring.
Silver Sable has also existed in Spider-Man’s universe for a long time. She first appeared in “Amazing Spider-Man” #265 in 1985 and worked with the web-slinger on multiple occasions. She is a mercenary who has faced off against Spidey but has also helped him. In addition to being an accomplished martial artist, Sable runs a company that targets war criminals.
