With Da 5 Bloods in the midst of awards conversation, Oscar winner and prolific director Spike Lee sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss the film, how it plays post-election and his memories of Chadwick Boseman.

Lee previously described Paul, the lead character in Da 5 Bloods as portrayed by Delroy Lindo, as “a MAGA-hat-wearing motherf***er.” 

When asked if he thinks his latest film plays differently post-election, Lee said, “No. I don’t think it’s going to change the power of the film at all.” In addition, Lee also took time to heap praise on Chadwick Boseman, who is garnering awards buzz for his performances in Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He said Boseman’s performance and watching it after his death it what has changed.

“I think what changes is watching this film after Chadwick left us. That’s what changes,” he said. “I mean, he was great in this film, and then it really does a whole other thing watching this film knowing that he’s no longer with us. It makes the character of Stormin’ Norman even more mythical. And I’ve got to say, he’s phenomenal in Ma Rainey too.”
