There’s another Lord of the Rings film headed to theaters.

During a new video update on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Peter Jackson also brought on Stephen Colbert to announce yet another Lord of the Rings film coming soon. This film, which has the working title The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, is written by Colbert, who is a Tolkien superfan, Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee. Fran Walsh, who helped create the original film trilogy, is also brought back to shape this new film with fellow original trilogy architects Jackson and Boyens.

What’s the film set to be about?

According to the synopsis, Shadow of the Past takes place over a decade after the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Here’s more from Warner Bros.

Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo – Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.

When will the film be released?

The film’s release date seems far from settled, but it’s presumed it will come to theaters after The Hunt for Gollum, which is directed by Andy Serkis, who reprises his iconic role as lost hobbit-turned-creature Gollum. The Hunt for Gollum is set for a December 2027 theatrical release.
