It’s going to be a hot summer with so many unique, adventurous and thrilling films coming to theaters! Here’s what you need to mark on your calendar for your summer viewing:
1. Men in Black: International (June 14)
Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth make their Thor: Ragnarok team-up work in this latest installment of the Men in Black franchise directed by F. Gary Gray. In the new film, Agents M (Thompson) and H (Hemsworth) face off against the organization’s biggest threat yet, a mole within the agency.
2. The Kitchen (August 9)
Tiffany Haddish stars alongside Melissa McCarthy and Elisabeth Moss in this adaptation of DC Comics/Vertigo’s gritty graphic novel about three mob wives who decide to run their husbands’ businesses while they serve prison time. Turns out they run things much tougher than their husbands ever did.
3. Shaft (June 14)
Richard Roundtree and Samuel L. Jackson reprise their roles as John Shaft I and John Shaft II. But they bring along Jessie T. Usher as John Shaft Jr., a cybersecurity expert who wants to uncover the reason behind his best friend’s untimely death. He turns to his father (Jackson) for help investigating Harlem’s underbelly.
4. The Lion King (July 19)
Jon Favreau’s reboot of Disney’s classic 1994 animated classic stars a host of Black stars, including James Earl Jones, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Keegan-Michael Key, Alfre Woodard, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Eric André, Florence Kasumba, John Kani and, of course, Beyoncé.
5. Child’s Play (June 21)
The original Child’s Play from 1988 featured a possessed doll, but this 2019 remake features a technologically-advanced doll that becomes more than what a group of kids bargain for. Brian Tyree Henry stars as Detective Mike Norris.
6. Luce (August 2)
Kelvin Johnson Jr. and Octavia Spencer star in a thriller about an all-star high school athlete and debater (Harrison) who was adopted from a war-torn country. However, his teacher (Spencer) makes a shocking discovery which puts this all-star’s reputation into question. Read our review of the film from Sundance here.
7. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (August 2)
Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their Fast & Furious characters Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw as they take on their biggest villain yet, a cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist named Brixton (Idris Elba) who gains control of a bio-threat that could change humanity forever.
8. The Secret Life of Pets 2 (June 7)
Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart combine comedic forces once again in the animated sequel The Secret Life of Pets 2. Hart reprises his role as cantakerous bunny Snowball, and Haddish joins as Daisy, both showcased in the picture above.
9. The Last Black Man in San Francisco (June 7)
Newcomer Jimmie Fails stars in a film based on his own life experiences trying to save his desire to retain his family home in San Francisco. The film is a fictionalized version of the short film Fails made with director Joe Talbot, who is also directing the feature-length version as well. Jonathan Majors, Tichina Arnold, Danny Glover, Mike Epps, Rob Morgan and Jamal Trulove also star. Read our review of the film from Sundance here.
10. Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5)
In Spider-Man: Far From Home, the friendly neighborhood Spidey joins, Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation, but his plan to leave super heroics are scrapped when he has to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several creature attacks across the continent. Zendaya returns to star with Samuel L. Jackson joining the cast and Tom Holland as Spider-Man.
