In the third big deal for a Black Sundance film to come in recent days, Amazon has picked up the worldwide rights to Eugene Ashe’s Sylvie’s Love starring Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha. As reported by Deadline, the deal is said to be in the high seven-figure range.
The film also stars Aja Naomi King, Ryan Michelle Bathe, Tone Bell, Eva Longoria Bastón, Regé-Jean Page, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jemima Kirke, MC Lyte, Alano Miller, Erica Gimpel and more. Ashe is the writer and director. Asomugha, Gabrielle Glore, Jonathan Baker and Matthew Thurm produce the film.
Here’s the logline: Years after their summer romance comes to an end, an aspiring television producer and a talented musician (Thompson and Asomugha) cross paths, only to find their feelings for each other never changed. With their careers taking them in different directions, they must choose what matters most.
Our Sundance review of the film reads in part: “Sylvie’s Love is a film that has romance, beauty and the delights and wonder of Black life.”
It is the third film picked up by Amazon from the fest this year. Late last week, Justin Simien’s Bad Hair was picked by Hulu and Radha Blank’s The 40-Year-Old Version was picked up by Netflix. Several other films had distributors prior to the festival, including A24 with Zola and Sony Pictures Classics with Charm City Kings.
