Making its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, director Sara Jordenö’s “Kiki” is a strikingly intimate documentary that offers riveting, complex insight into a safe space created and governed by LGBTQ youths of color in New York City, who are demanding happiness and political power. The film is a coming-of-age story about agency, resilience, and the transformative art form of voguing.

Sundance Selects/IFC has now acquired USA distribution rights to “Kiki,” which is produced by Story and Hard Working Movies.

Following its Sundance premiere, “Kiki” screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Teddy Award for best documentary/essay film, as well as the Kathleen Bryan Edwards Award for Human Rights at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.

“Sara Jordenö and Twiggy Pucci Garçon spent four revelatory years in the LBGTQ ballroom scene in New York City documenting the electrifying and empowering DIY culture that has continued to evolve in the 25 years since ‘Paris Is Burning’ first introduced film audiences to the art of ‘voguing’,” said Arianna Bocco, Sundance Selects SVP of acquisitions and productions. “‘Kiki’ explodes with energy and hope as it introduces some of the most unforgettable characters and amazing dance sequences seen recently in documentary film.”
