Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha are starring and co-producing Jazz-era romance film, Sylvie.
According to Deadline, the film, stemming from a screenplay by Eugene Ashe, is set between the late 1950s and early 1960s and follows Sylvie (Thompson), a woman who meets saxophonist Robert (Asomugha) when he takes a job in her father’s record store. Years later after a whirlwind summer romance, they meet once again and realize the love between each other hasn’t died. Along with writing the screenplay, Ashe will also produce with Asomugha and Thompson, the latter of whom is acting as executive producer.
With films like If Beale Street Could Talk and Moonlight now in the ether, it would appear that Black love is finally being recognized by the mainstream media. Seeing authentic Black love stories is something I’ve personally always wanted to see more of in Hollywood, so I can’t wait to see the first look images from this film whenever it’s time for the film’s marketing tour.
Thompson has several films in development, and multiple that are due out soon, including Men in Black: International. Asomugha, the NFL star-turned-actor and husband of Kerry Washington, was last seen in Crown Heights, opposite Lakeith Stanfield.
