The trailer for the Birdman and Benny Boom-produced film, Tazmanian Devil, has released its first trailer. In the film, Beasts of No Nation star Abraham Attah stars as Dayo, a Nigerian immigrant to America, who “struggles to balance his conflicting desires of joining a college fraternity and bonding with his strictly religious father.”
The film, from director Solomon Onita Jr., was a contender for BET’s Project Cre8 in 2018. At the time Onita said that “many Nigerian immigrants who move to America, they view fraternities as a very destructive, dangerous organization to join. They are pretty much like gangs that you see here in America.” Onita, who is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., said that after moving to America, “[Dayo] sees a very different fraternity than what he knew from home.”
The film also stars The Chi‘s Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Pariah‘s Adepero Oduye and Kwesi Boakye and is produced by Cash Money Films, Groundwurk Studios and TigerEye Films.
Onita says Tazmanian Devil aims to portray Black Greek organizations in a positive light: “This film was different from other films that deal with fraternity culture. This film makes a positive case for fraternities rather than just repeating old tired stereotypes.” Indeed, several films about Black Greek organizations have been criticized in the past, such as 2017’s Burning Sands starring Trevor Jackson and 2018’s Step Sisters starring Megalyn Echikunwoke.
