Netflix has become one of the major hubs for Black content.
The first trailer for their upcoming documentary The Black Godfather premiered online today (May 23) and is giving viewers a glimpse into the life of one of America’s first influencers.
The Black Godfather will chart the rise of Clarence Avant, a former music executive who left the Jim Crow south to become a powerful negotiator that impacted the legacies of our most treasured Black American icons at the height of their careers. Avant was a behind-the-scenes player who often gave advice to the world’s most powerful Black icons such as Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron and even former President Barack Obama.
As evidenced by the trailer, The Black Godfather will feature interviews from Jamie Foxx, Barack Obama, Quincy Jones, Cicely Tyson, Ludacris, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Snoop Dogg. The Black Godfather will be directed by Reginald Hudlin, who directed the autobiographical film Marshall. The Black Godfather will be produced by Nicole Avant, Byron Phillips, Nelson George and Caitrin Rogers.
The documentary will be released on Netflix and in select theaters on June 7.
