Besting all box office projections, The Equalizer 2 came out on top this weekend, beating another sequel, Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again.
The film was only expected to gross around mid-$20M.
As of Sunday morning, the film, which has received mixed reviews from critics, has grossed $35.8M statewide in comparison to Mamma‘s $34.4M.
This is the highest opening of Director Antoine Fuqua’s career, passing The Magnificent Seven’s $37.5M.
It is the third-best stateside opening for Washington, after American Gangster and Safe House at $43.5M and $40.1M respectively.
Elsewhere, The First Purge hits a total of $60M, continuing to make waves against its $13M budget.
Sorry to Bother You hits the top ten in its third week of expansion (and only clocking in at just over 1k screens) and Dwayne Johnson’s Skyscraper continues to disappoint.
