The First Purge, which features a predominately black cast, has become the franchise’s best overseas performer by becoming the highest-grossing Purge film at the international box office as well as the third Purge film to make over $100 million worldwide.
The First Purge has made $41.6 million overseas and $104.85 million worldwide. Top overseas markets include the UK at $6.2 million, France with $5.5 million, Mexico with $5.4 million, Spain at $4.5 million and Germany at $4.4 million.
The First Purge focuses on the events surrounding, as the title suggests, the very first Purge Night. The New Founding Fathers of America want to test a sociological theory involving people being able to live out their most debased urged for 12 hours without impunity. As the government is wont to do, they decide to test the theory in a largely black inner city community in Staten Island.
The FIrst Purge is directed by Gerard McMurray and stars Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez and Marisa Tomei.
