In January, Sony Pictures Animation announced its upcoming roster of titles through 2018, along with additional highly anticipated future feature film projects.

Of note, given this blog’s stated interests was an “Untitled Animated Spider-Man” feature film that will star, not Peter Parker, but Miles Morales – a.k.a. the first black Spider-Man in the official Marvel Comics universe.

Set for a December 21, 2018 release, the feature is being shepherded by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, and will be directed by Peter Ramsey (who’s black, by the way, for those who don’t know) and Bob Persichetti, from a script written by Lord.

Announced today, Shameik Moore (breakout star of Rick Famuyiwa’s “Dope” and Netflix’s current musical drama “The Get Down”), will voice Miles Morales in the Sony project.

In addition, Liev Schreiber will give voice to the movie’s villain, who hasn’t been revealed yet, and neither has the film’s plot, which is being kept underwraps for now.

Previously, Donald Glover voiced Miles Morales in in Disney XD’s animated series “Ultimate Spider-Man,” where he was voiced by Donald Glover.

Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Lord and Miller are executive producing; Christina Steinberg is producing.

With this news, one can only wonder whether a live-action Miles Morales movie might eventually follow, although likely not immediately after.
