Hulu will adapt Zakiya Dalila Harris’ upcoming novel The Other Black Girl, Deadline reports. The novel will be published by Atria/Simon & Schuster in 2021. The adaptation of The Other Black Girl is currently in development now.
The adaptation will be co-written by Harris herself, who will also act as executive producer with former Netflix executive and tetraVision founder Tara Duncan.
The project, like the book, will focus on Nella, a Black editorial assistant in a white publishing firm in New York City. A new Black cowoker, Hazel, arrives, and at first Nella is excited to have another Black person at work. But soon, Nella goes from becoming the office’s favorite to “public enemy number one,” according to the project’s description, which also states the book “is a darkly comedic take on workplace politics and the importance of female friendship.”
The book was the subject of an intense bidding war, with the winning deal brokered by Duncan. According to Deadline, it was Duncan’s influence that helped Hulu win the project. Duncan is now under an overall deal at Hulu. At Netflix, she worked on series like Narcos and Orange Is The New Black.
