Almost two years since he signed a massive production deal with Viacom, the first project from Tyler Perry at BET has been set.
The Oval has a straight-to-series order. It’ll star Ed Quinn, Kron Moore, Paige Hurd and Daniel Croix Henderson.
Perry will write, direct and produce the series, which “revolves around the picture-perfect first couple that, behind closed doors, are anything but. The scripted offering explores lies, cheating and corruption.” Quinn will play Hunter Franklin, the newly elected president of the U.S.; Moore will play first lady Victoria Frankin; Paige Hurd will play the couple’s wild child daughter, Gayle; Daniel Croix Henderson will play their troubled teen son, Jason.
It will debut in 2020. Production begins this summer and will take place in Atlanta. The details about the other three series are unknown right now. It is worth noting that these are four series are expected to air on BET’s linear cable network as originals, and not originals for BET’s upcoming streaming service, BET+, which will also house content by Perry. The four shows, two comedies and two dramas, are in development alongside a live holiday production.
“I’ve been hard at work on The Oval and can’t wait to share this story with audiences. I’ve set out to create a show that tells the story of a family placed in the White House by people of power while also highlighting the personal side and everyday lives of the staff who run the inner-workings of the nation’s most iconic residence,” said Perry.
As a part of a revamped BET slate, The Oval joins recently-renewed series Boomerang and American Soul, as well as another upcoming Waithe series, Twenties. Two shows that were set to air on BET, Tracy Y. Oliver’s First Wives Club and Will Packer’s Peachtree Place, will air on BET+.
