The Oscars might have failed to give If Beale Street Could Talk its due apart from awarding Regina King with the award for Best Supporting Actress. However, The 2019 Independent Spirit Awards gave the film the props it deserves.
Barry Jenkins won Best Director, a category he wasn’t even nominated for by the Academy. The film also won Best Feature in contrast to the Academy ignoring the movie when it came to Best Picture nominations, but still felt like it could use snippets from the film in its “year in film” opening montage.
The only win the film received at the Oscars was King’s win for her role. She had already won Best Supporting Female Actor from the Independent Spirit Awards, as well.
Even though If Beale Street Could Talk was one of the many stellar 2018 films snubbed during the Oscars, it’s good to know that there has been an award show that saw the beauty and timeliness in this adaptation of James Baldwin’s masterwork.
Other winners this year included Boots Riley, who won Best First Feature for Sorry to Bother You.
