The parallels between Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing and Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us have always been there–the year of 1989, racial injustice, the setting of New York City, and heavy emotions. But now they are inescapable in our latest mashup celebrating the 30th anniversary of Lee’s classic film.

The mashup also provides us with clarity on another fact: DuVernay’s Netflix series is already an insta-classic, seeing how it has broken records for the streaming service. It’s well on its way to becoming a series that will influence generations to come, just like Lee’s work.
