Tiffany Haddish is one of the biggest comedic talents in the industry today, and even though the Girls Trip actress is steadily adding film credits to her name, like Night School and The Oath. But comedy isn’t the only arena Haddish wants to play in; she wants to be Wonder Woman’s sister Nubia.
“I would love to do Mystery Girl, or play Wonder Woman’s sister, ’cause she has a sister. In the 1978 issue of ‘Wonder Woman,’ she has a sister named Nubia,” she said to IndieWire. “She has a black sister. Only person that could kill her. They don’t tell you that though, too much. Me and Gal Gadot. That would be sold out.”
The tidbit was highlighted in an article by IndieWire’s Jude Dry, who wrote that Haddish is being pigeon-holed into “second fiddle” roles alongside “less-funny men,” citing Ike Barinholtz and Kevin Hart’s performances in The Oath and Night School having to ride the coat-tails of Haddish’s show-stealing ability.
Of The Oath, Dry wrote, “Haddish plays supportive wife Kai to Barinhotlz’s Chris, a broad caricature of a left-leaning news junkie. A consummate scene-stealer, Haddish manages to eke out a few laughs from a slew of disappointed-wife routines. (There’s a lot of: ‘Can I talk to you in the other room for a second?’)”. Of Night School, Dry also wrote that in Haddish’s role as “another woman whose job it is to nag a man, boss him around, and ultimately–help him grow,” Haddish still “manages to squeeze a personality into tough-as-nails Carrie, and she finds a far better scene partner in Hart than in Barinholtz.”
Haddish’s hope to star opposite Gadot isn’t all when it comes to Haddish’s potential to break out of her comedic pigeon-hole; according to IndieWire, Haddish will star in The Kitchen, a film written and directed by Fresh Outta Compton writer Andrea Berloff based on the comic book by Ollie Masters.
Like the comic from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, the film chronicles the story of three mob wives in the 1970s who take on their husbands’ roles when they get sent to prison. Haddish stars alongside Melissa McCarthy, whom Haddish called “a phenomenal actress,” Elizabeth Moss, Margo Martindale and Domhnall Gleeson. Haddish said to IndieWire that she “can’t wait for the world” to see the film. If the film finally showcases Haddish’s dramatic chops once it drops Sept. 20, 2019, perhaps the road to Nubia might be more in reach.
