Despite Angela Bassett’s masterful turn as Tina Turner in 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do With It?, Hollywood hasn’t fully documented Turner’s life and legacy. But now, a new documentary will be the first to bring her real life story to the big screen.

The documentary (working title Tina Turner) is being shopped to buyers at Cannes via Altitude Film Sales, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The documentary comes from filmmakers Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin, who also created award-winning films LA 92 and Undefeated and producing company Lightbox (which is also producing Kevin Macdonald’s Whitney, the upcoming documentary about Whitney Houston’s life).

Tina Turner will feature interviews with Turner and her family members, friends and musical collaborators. Interwoven between the interviews will be footage, some of it never seen before, showcasing stage presence and dynamism. “Delving beyond the public narrative of her iconic life story, it will uncover who Tina really is as a private person; the deep emotional and spiritual resources she has been able to draw on to transcend these hurdles and rise to these heights,” states the Reporter.

“This is the first time I’ve agreed to be a part of a major documentary about my life and it’s certainly a leap of faith!” Turner said. “But I’m excited about the process we’re about to embark on and hope my story, presented in an honest and authentic way and made by award-winning documentary filmmakers, will give audiences a true sense of what life has been from my point of view. And if my story inspires people and gives them hope, it will have been worth it.”
