In the tradition of music legends Carole King, Gloria Estefan, and Donna Summer, the story of rock and roll icon Tina Turner is set to hit the Broadway stage.
Stage Entertainment has confirmed that Tina, the musical named on the life of the living legend, is slated to have its Broadway premiere in the fall of 2019. The play premiered overseas in London at the Aldwych Theater in April this year to both critical and commercial acclaim.
While the exact Broadway venue where Tina is set to premiere hasn’t been announced, all information pertinent to the play, including who will portray Turner, will be released in the coming months.
“Bringing this musical to life on stage and working with this team has meant so much to me, I feel that it is in many ways a culmination of my career,” Tina Turner said. “London audiences have been and continue to be extraordinary. Now, the bright lights of Broadway are calling, and I’m very excited to share this beautiful show with New York audiences next year.”
The musical chronicles Turner’s life from her humble upbringing in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her meteoric ascent to international superstardom. Tina was directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by written by Katori Hall, Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins. This isn’t the first time Turner’s life was adapted for audiences, as her biography was covered in the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do with It.
