TNT has made the decision to pass on Beast Mode, the would-be series inspired by the life of boxing legend Ann Wolfe. Deadline exclusively broke the news.
The pilot starred Tony Award-winning actress Anika Noni Rose as Marsha Blackstone, an acclaimed boxer and a mother of two known for her unconventional methods of boxing training. After being fired by a boxer she was training for a world title, Marsha sets her sights on finding a new fighter to train. However, as her ambitions and desire to distance herself from a past of poverty and abuse get the best of her, Marsha’s professional woes start to bleed into her personal life. Chante Adams and Geffri Maya would have played her daughters.
The pilot for Beast Mode was written and executive produced by David Schneiderman and directed by Tina Mabry, who has most notably served as a director, writer and producer on the OWN drama Queen Sugar and the USA drama Queen Of The South. MACRO’s Charles D. King, Kim Roth and Poppy Hanks served as producers.
Rose won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Emmie Thibodeaux in Caroline, or Change. She’s also known as the voice of Princess Tiana, Disney’s first Black princess, in the 2009 film, The Princess And The Frog. She also starred in the lead role of Dr. Eva Fletcher on BET’s former HBCU drama The Quad.
