Although these are issues that have been ongoing, given that each risk has implications that reverberate throughout the African American community, we continue to focus our attention on the socio-ecological challenges facing African American boys, emphasizing the roles and contributions of African American fathers.

Although a larger public dialogue has centered on fatherhood in the African American community, one filmmaker hopes to contribute to the discussion with a more personal, introspective touch via her documentary titled “In a Perfect World.”

The Showtime premium cable TV network presents the feature-length documentary directed by Daphne McWilliams, that explores the dynamics of what it is to be a man raised by a single mother, told through the lens of the director, who happens to be a single mother herself, and her relationship with her solo-parented son.

The film features interviews with men of diverse backgrounds and ages, sharing painfully personal anecdotes in the wake of emotionally turbulent and unsettling periods of their youth. It’s both a deeply personal and introspective portrait of a modern family, as well as a probing cinematic essay examining one of society’s major ailments.

“In a Perfect World” premieres tonight, Wednesday, June 21 at 8 PM ET/PT on Showtime.
