Tyler Perry will become the recipient of BET’s Ultimate Icon Award at the 19th annual BET Awards on June 23.

The screenwriter, actor, director and producer will be awarded for his impact in the entertainment industry. Perry is most notable for the Madea franchise, as well as crafting films such as For Colored Girls, Acrimony, Why Did I Get Married? and The Family That Preys. The eleventh and final installment in the Madea film franchise, Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral, was released in March.

Perry got his start on the stage, producing various stage plays before transitioning to film with his directorial debut, Diary Of A Mad Black Woman. The multihyphenate has also gone on to create television shows such as The Have and the Have Nots and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne.

The 19th annual BET Awards will be hosted by Regina Hall, who is also nominated in the Best Actress category alongside Issa Rae, Regina King, Taraji P. Henson, Tiffany Haddish and Viola Davis.
