South Africa is getting its very own Ugly Betty.
Production company Known Associates Entertainment is bringing the Colombian telenovela Betty La Fea to South Africa thanks to a deal with Colombia’s RCN. According to Variety, the news was announced Monday at Cannes’ Mipcom television trade show. The production company is currently talking to broadcasters to find the adaptation a home.
“It is a great pleasure to be able to bring this evergreen home to South African audiences, and we are looking forward to finding the best broadcaster for the series,” said Joel Phiri, Known Associates’ chairman, as reported by Variety. “We intend to make it along much the same lines as the other successful ‘Ugly Bettys’: with a local flavor, and in South African languages.”
Betty La Fea has been a worldwide hit with multiple adaptations, including ABC’s Ugly Betty in the United States starring America Ferrera.
