It’s official: Velma Dinkley of Scooby-Doo likes women, and this aspect of her identity made its way into the franchise’s latest film.

A new film called Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! is set to air in the United States later this month, and this project — which can already be rented or purchased via Amazon Prime Video — notably shows Velma crushing on a female character named Coco Diablo.

A clip from the movie recently began circulating that shows the first moment that the two characters interact, indicating that Velma was totally smitten with Coco from the moment she laid eyes on her.

“OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY CANON CANON IN THE MOVIES LETS GOOOOOO,” the user wrote above the widely circulated clip.

In another clip, Velma outright admits that she’s “crushing big time” on Coco.

While this may come as a shock to many, some high-ranking creatives have previously spoken about how they always sought to have Velma portrayed as a member of the queer community.

Tony Cervone, the supervising producer of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated discussed the subject of Velma’s sexuality way back in 2020, noting that — while he wasn’t able to confirm it on the series — her LGBTQ+ identity was somewhat of an open secret.

“Marcie and Velma – Mystery Incorporated. I obviously don’t represent every version of Velma Dinkley, but I am one of the key people that represent this one. We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago. Most of our fans got it. To those that didn’t, I suggest you look closer. There’s no new news here,” he explained beneath an Instagram post, which shows the characters standing in front of an LGBTQ+ flag.

Cervone further elaborated on the matter, clarifying that Velma is a lesbian, not bisexual.

“I’ve said this before, but Velma in Mystery Inc is not bi. She’s gay,” he noted in an Instagram comment.

“We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character while she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her, and she had unspoken difficulty with the why,” Cervone shared.

James Gunn, a filmmaker who worked on the beloved Scooby-Doo live-action movies, also took to social media to say that he also attempted to have Velma portrayed as “explicitly gay.”

“In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel),” he penned in a now-deleted tweet, PEOPLE reports.

We should also add that, setting Cervone and Gunn’s statements aside, many said that they’ve always known that Velma wasn’t straight.

While the film only appears to be available through Amazon Prime Video, Radio Times reports that it will also be available on HBO Max starting Oct. 14.
