Universal has just landed a huge, competitive bid for Terry McMillan’s best-selling novel, I Almost Forgot About You. 

It will serve as a vehicle for Viola Davis, according to Deadline.

Girls Trip’s Malcolm D. Lee will direct.

Gail Berman and Joe Earley from The Jackal Group (who first acquired the novel) are producing with Davis and her husband and JuVee Productions partner Julius Tennon, as well as Lee under his Blackmaled Productions.

Ron Bass and McMillan (who last teamed on the last film adaptations of her novels, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Waiting to Exhale) are writing the script.

It’s description: “She will play Georgia Young, a twice-divorced, successful optometrist. Despite a life, full of great friends and family, she hasn’t felt a romantic spark in a while, and feeling bored and restless. She decides it’s time to change, and goes on a wild journey of self-discovery, reuniting with old lovers, and getting a brand new lease on life.”

Lee is coming off of directing Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish’s Night School. Davis, who stars in ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder, is also working on many projects, including Steve McQueen’s Widows.
