How appropriate that we should post an episode (before this one) of the web series “Black Folks Don’t…” which explores the worn cinema trope of black people not making til the end of horror films. How many times have we seen that? It never gets old…
Well I don’t I need to tell you that black folks also don’t make it to the end of sci-fi movies either. You would think that this old trope would also be dead and buried by now, but it’s still very much alive and kicking, well into the 21st century. Hollywood and filmmakers just can’t bare the thought of having a black man as the hero, let alone as just a survivor. They seem to believe that white audiences will run screaming out of movie theaters in disgust at the sight of a black man or woman still alive at the end of whatever horror or sci-fi movie they are watching.
And here for your consideration is the latest example – the brand new trailer for the sci-fi film “Life”, which opens on Memorial Day weekend next year here in the States.
Directed by Swedish filmmaker Daniel Espinosa, who directed the 2012 thriller “Safe House” with Denzel Washington (come to think of it, Washington’s character didn’t make it out of that movie alive either), “Life” is simply another version of that old premise you’ve seen many times before, that of a space station threatened by some dangerous alien life form.
Starring Jake Gyllenhall and Ryan Reynolds, the film also has British actor Ariyon Bakare, who has a ton of British TV credits, including “Dancing in the Dark”, but as the international trailer for film below shows, it doesn’t appear that his character will stick around in “Life” for long. But maybe he will. We’ll see when the movie comes out.
Can’t a brother get a break for once?
