In a new segment of Vanity Fair’s Notes on a Scene, famed costume designer Ruth E. Carter breaks down costumes from two Black Panther scenes — T’Challa’s entrance back into Wakanda and Challenge Day.
Several intricacies were revealed, including strategic ones such as the meaning behind Shuri (Letitia Wright)’s shirt as she stood waiting to welcome her brother back home.

Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, with Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.
The film is directed by Ryan Coogler and produced by Kevin Feige with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nate Moore, Jeffrey Chernov and Stan Lee serving as executive producers. Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole wrote the screenplay.
The film is available for digital download now and will be available on Blu-Ray May 15.
