In July 2015, Vice unveiled Broadly, its women-focused channel that debuted on August 3, 2015, so it’s almost a year old now. It covers topics that run the gamut – politics, culture, lifestyle, sex, fashion, and much more – all from the perspective of women around the world.

It’s a global endeavor, like its parent company, broadcasting in-depth documentaries about various subjects – especially those that may not be as well covered by mainstream news sources. Vice has made a point of being a place for men looking for “non-traditional” stories and news coverage, so this is an attempt at trying to appeal to women also seeking “non-traditional” stories, featuring a team of all-women correspondents (as you’d fully expect), tackling news with the same unfiltered approach that has given its parent – Vice – the uncompromising reputation it has today. I’m certainly a subscriber, and have shared some of Vice’s content on this blog in the past.

This is the 5th Broadly piece I’ve published on S&A, and it likely won’t be the last.

In this edition, Broadly sits down with Chirlane McCray (aka The First Lady of New York) in Gracie Mansion (for non-New Yorkers, Gracie Mansion is the official residence of the Mayor of New York City). In the 10-minute video, McCray talks media scrutiny, sexual fluidity, breaking down the stigma around mental illness, and being a political radical in one of the nation’s oldest houses of political power. McCray’s husband, Bill de Blasio (aka Mayor of New York City) is a name and face that I think we’re all very familiar with. After all, he’s the Mayor. So I was especially appreciative of this Broadly piece since it showcases McCray in a way that I don’t believe we’ve seen before (I certainly haven’t). As she says herself in the video, she was glad to sit with Broadly so that people can see who she really is, instead of the “caricature” some might make her out to be, based on her history, and politics.
