You have to admit this is a new one. While web series tend to deal with romantic relationships, or on young people trying to get their professional or love lives together, filmmaker Keith Walker has taken a decidedly different and more personal approach. His new series "Chemosabe" (get it?) is what he calls a "dark comedy" about his own battle with cancer.
He was diagnosed just a month after his 24th birthday with a rare blood cancer called multiple myeloma and, during his time in the hospital, he met and fell in love with a woman who ultimately passed away. But despite the tragic turn of events, his relationship with her inspired him to write his first short film, "Chemo: A Love Story," which he says he made to "fill the void between older people with cancer and young people with cancer."
The filmmaker says that when he was first diagnosed with the disease, "I thought I was going to look good going bald; I thought I was going to look like Sam Jackson or Nick Fury, but, alas, unfortunately the only thing I looked like was an ashy Uncle Fester."
The end result was his web series, "Chemosabe," which Walker created with Devin Elting.
It follows the life of Myles Foreman, a man who was diagnosed with cancer but is no longer in remission, and is forced to start treatment with the help of his sister and best friend, Death.
Unfortunately, three years ago Walker fell out of remission and was forced to start all over again, and he "wanted to create something that could educate while entertain."
As he says: "It’s interesting when I was first diagnosed with cancer in 2008, I kept it a secret for five months. I was ashamed of who and what I was. Toxic shame… I thought I was my cancer. When you’re in your 20s and 30s you don’t expect to be diagnosed with cancer; you believe you’re immortal. Now, I feel it’s an honor and quite frankly my responsibility to tell people about my journey and to prove there can be life after cancer. I may never be completely cancer-free, but it’s not going to prevent me from living my life."
The first three episodes of the web series can be seen on YouTube. Below is the first.
