With the “Nina” brouhaha now behind her, and hopefully forgotten, Zoe Saldana has moved on to other projects; her next being the gangster epic “Live by Night” for Warner Bros, which is coming out this winter.
The film, starring and directed by Ben Affleck, his third outing behind the camera after his very successful turns with “The Town” and “Argo”, and based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, the film centers on the son of a cop who, during the Prohibition Era of the 1930’s, realizes there’s a lot more money and excitement to be made and had as a gangster than leading the good and straight life. That is until until he gets in over his head with rivals.
Judging from the trailer, Saldana plays a love interest to Affeck in the film – one of the few times, outside of the “Star Trek” movies, that Saldana has been in a film in which she wasn’t a blue computer generated character, a green alien, or in blackface. And as you can see, it’s going to be a violent, action-packed movie. Though one objection – what’s the deal with all the too-obvious CGI explosions? With a reported budget of $110 million, couldn’t they blow up stuff for real, like they used to do in movies?
“Live by Night” opens wide in January 2017, although Warner is planning a limited release in December for the film to qualify for Oscar nominations.
