UPDATE: KiKi Layne has also been cast as Prince Akeem’s daughter, the yet-to-be cast character referenced in our report.
Previously reported: Some new and familiar faces have come aboard Coming to America 2.
Wesley Snipes has joined the cast of Coming to America 2. He’ll play General Izzi, the ruler of a nearby African nation. If you recall, there was another Izzi in the original Coming to America, Colonel Izzi, played by Calvin Lockhart. One can assume that he must be related in some way to the original character, but no confirmation has been given. There’s also no word on what role Snipes’ General Izzi will play in the overall story.
And according to an exclusive report from Deadline, James Earl Jones, and Paul Bates will return in their roles from the original film and Rick Ross will be portraying a new character.
So far, what we do know is that the sequel will follow the adventures of Prince Akeem (Murphy) as he realizes that he has a long-lost heir to the throne in America. We reported earlier this year that Jermaine Fowler had been cast as a lead alongside a returning Eddie Murphy. Fowler is presumed to be playing the long-lost heir. If other previous reports are believed to be true, there may be a young woman heir in Zamunda that will also be a lead, but that news has never been confirmed in any of the more recent casting reports.
Coming to America 2 will be directed by Craig Brewer from a script by Kenya Barris. The film will be out in theaters in 2020. It reunites Brewer, Murphy and Snipes, who worked on the Netflix film, Dolemite Is My Name, which bows at TIFF next month.
