Daniel Kaluuya is an esteemed actor, having earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role in Jordan Peele’s horror film Get Out and positive reviews for his work in Queen & Slim. Given that both films deal with the subject of race, it comes as no surprise that Kaluuya is often asked about racial issues in interviews. However, the Academy Award-nominated actor recently revealed that he’s tired of being asked about it.

In an interview with The Radio Times, Kaluuya revealed his views on being asked about race in interviews.

“What is there to talk about race? It’s just boring to me,” Kaluuya said. “What’s the debate? I’m more of a doer. I’m just going to do what I want to do.”

The actor, who also starred in Widows and Black Panther, revealed that he doesn’t want to be defined by race nor become a spokesperson for racial issues.

“I’m not going to ignore that I’m surrounded by [racial issues], but I’m not defined by it,” he said. “I’m just Daniel, who happens to be Black.”

Kaluuya referenced his prior roles in the Netflix comedy Psychoville and the British drama Skins as examples when the race of his characters was not the main defining trait.

“The Fades ain’t about race, Psychoville ain’t about race, Skins ain’t about race, Chatroom ain’t about race, Johnny English Reborn ain’t about race. But that almost gets erased. There’s a narrative that is pushed,” he added.
