Since the announcement of a new category for the Oscars titled Best Popular Film,. many critics have decried the inclusion of this category.

Now, This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown is giving his two cents.

At an FYC event for This Is Us at Paramount Studios, Brown informed Variety of his opinion on the matter, specifically asking the question as to what constitutes a nomination in this category. “If it’s something that can give it some sort of merit and legitimacy, then I think it’s cool,” said Brown, who appeared in the Oscar-caliber and critically acclaimed blockbuster Black Panther. “But I think ‘Black Panther’ stands on its own merits regardless of its popularity as being a wonderful piece of art,” he continued.

Many believe the inclusion of a Best Popular Film category undermines the fact that in recent years, tentpole films such as Logan and Wonder Woman were each worthy of Best Picture nods.

Adding to the confusion of the category various ‘popular’ films such as Hidden Figures and Get Out earned Best Picture nods.
