In the wake of his now-viral moment in which he slapped Chris Rock onstage at the 94th Oscars, Academy Award winner Will Smith has now issued an apology.
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally,” Smith wrote. “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
During the 94th Oscars ceremony, comedian Rock took to the stage to present the Best Documentary Award. During his presentation, the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith being in a sequel to the film GI Jane, referencing the actress’ bald look and seemingly taking a jab at the actress’ battle with alopecia, which causes hair loss. The joke did not sit well with Smith, who proceeded to run up on stage and slap Rock. The moment spurred confusion from many on social media, who was unsure if the moment was staged or real.
Shortly after, Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in King Richard and received a standing ovation. During his speech, the legendary actor issued an apology to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
“I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world,” Smith continued in the post. “I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us. I am a work in progress.”
